House panel to married women: use of hubby's surname not compulsory

In a fitting tribute to Filipino women during the observance of the National Women’s Month, the House Committee on Revision of Laws has unanimously approved a bill clarifying that married women have the right to retain their maiden names instead of adopting the surnames of their husbands.

In a committee meeting on Thursday, March 11, members of the House panel chaired by Zambales Rep. Cheryl Deloso-Montalla were made co-authors of House Bill No. 1426 filed by Makati City Rep. Luis Jose Angel N. Campos Jr.
Campos is married to Makati City Mayor Abby Binay who has not adopted the congressman’s surname in public or in politics. ....

House panel OKs creation of commission to codify PH laws

The House Committee on Revision of Laws approved on Tuesday, February 16, a draft bill that would institutionalize a Congress-attached “Code Commission of the Philippines” to compile and organize all of the existing laws in the Philippines for swift consultation and review.

The unnumbered bill, to be called the proposed “2021 Code Commission Act of the Philippines” consolidated the House Bill Nos. 2764 and 1550 filed by Cagayan de Oro representative and House Deputy Speaker Rufus Rodriguez, Ako Bicol Party List Representatives Alfredo Garbin Jr. and Elizaldy Co, respectively.
“While our country has sufficient laws, they are not fully implemented, and are often violated because many of our fellowmen are not aware of the existence of certain laws,” Rodriguez said in his bill. ....

Bill filed to legalize weddings via videoconferencing
House Bill No. 7042 or the proposed Virtual Marriage Act was filed to legalize weddings done via videoconferencing, by Kabayan Party List Rep. Ron Salo.
‘Virtual’ refers to the use of video, audio and data transmission devices that allow people from different physical locations to simultaneously communicate, see and hear each other,’ the House bill read.
The bill specifically provides that “contracting parties must be physically present together in the same location.” The solemnizing officer and the witnesses may be present elsewhere.
Engaged couples did not welcome the bill saying it takes away the solemnity of the ceremony and does not make it special for a once in a lifetime event. ....

House panel takes up bill allowing virtual marriages

The House Committee on Revision of Laws on Tuesday, February 9, started discussing House Bill No. 7042, which seeks to amend the Family Code of the Philippines, and permit the virtual presence of couples and their witnesses during a ceremony.
Kabayan Party List Representative Ron Salo, author of the bill, said it was high time for Congress to pass the proposed “Virtual Marriage Act” amid the prohibition on mass gatherings and social distancing measures. Some states in the US have already adopted this due to the persisting coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic.
He also said the bill would be “perfectly-timed” for Valentine’s Day. ....
