Lambing Basics for the New Shepherd | MOTHER EARTH NEWS

A lamb bottle and nipple
We keep all of the items from the first two lists in a handy tub to carry out to the lambing shelter with us. We keep our ewes in a permanently fenced winter pasture that includes a 3-sided shelter large enough to divide into large birthing pens when we think they are within a day of giving birth. Emergency nursing supplies are rarely needed so we keep them stored in the house. If you have to use them, follow the instructions on the containers.
What Happens on Lambing Day?
In a typical birth, the ewe’s water will break, she’ll go through a period of labor, and she’ll give birth. On our farm this typically happens in the dark morning hours in early to mid-March. By the time we arrive on the scene, the ewe is generally finished licking her baby clean. Lambs take 30-60 minutes to get fully on their feet and figure out the mechanics of nursing. ....

Meat Rabbits as a Sustainable and Affordable Protein Source

.
In the spring of 2020, we decided to venture into meat rabbits and stop raising meat chickens.
One of the reasons being rabbits are much more sustainable: you don’t need to order meat breeds from a hatchery or try and breed and/or hatch with low success rates in some of the more traditional broiler breeds.
We bought a breeding trio consisting of two does and a buck. We decided on the TAMUK Composite rabbits bred out of Texas A&M as they are a mix bred for heat tolerance. With our 100°F+ summers, that was important for our area. Rabbits do not tolerate heat well and are sometimes known to die in temperatures over 85°F. We make sure each rabbit gets a frozen 2 liter bottle on any day over 85°F to snuggle up to cool off. ....

6 Best Dog Breeds for Families Living in the Countryside

Mastiff
Though they are not as agile as some of the other breeds on this list, having a Mastiff on your homestead can act as a deterrent for others.
Research shows that having a large, intimidating dog around your property reduces the likelihood of poaching significantly. Providing a shelter for your mastiff-type dog to stay outside with your animals will cause any poachers to think twice before entering your property.
The scent of a large dog on your property is also likely to deter any natural predators such as wolves or foxes.
Despite their scary appearance, Mastiff type dogs are often gentle and cautious dogs with lots of love to give. This makes them a good match for families with young children about! ....

Emergency Preparedness Products for the Homestead or the "Bug Out Bag"

Sawyer Tap Water Filter
If the last two years taught us anything, it’s to be prepared. From massive wildfires on the West Coast to frozen pipes in Texas, from a catastrophic derecho in Iowa to massive Nor’easters and hurricanes, the weather has become increasingly variable, unstable and unpredictable. And, in many cases, infrastructure and the government response to calamity, vulnerable or lacking.
While our completely solar-powered homestead, when combined with woodstove for heat in the winter, might tease us into complacency, we realize it’s impossible to predict the next turn of events in what seems to be Kunstler’s Long Emergency reality. My wife, Lisa Kivirist, and son Liam, and I are no stranger to disaster preparedness. We always have our stash of bottled water, stand-by flashlights and other lights, and even a solar-powered backpack for when we’re on the move. We have several go-to solar ovens that we use nearly every day in the warmer seasons to bake ....

Cows and Hardware Disease: Using Magnets for Nails in the Gut

Miro , the Hereford bull. Photos by John Klar
One great benefit of cows is their resilience rugged, and uncomplaining. But even cows have their Achilles heels; or, in this case, an Achilles rumen. It is easy for such big eaters to ingest rusted metal or old tacks in feed or just milling around munching on old shingles or whatever they find to sample.
This is called “Hardware Disease” (or, traumatic reticuloperitonitis) and can become very serious in both beef and dairy cows. Some farmers routinely deposit one or two “cow magnets” in all their cows, where they will remain their entire lives as precautionary prophylactics,  More often, a farmer will see the signs kicking the belly, an arched back or uneasy gait,  laying down and getting up in discomfort, a drop in feed consumption or milk production.  ....
