Air quality advisory issued in Lane County due to Middle Fork Complex fires

An air quality advisory has been issued Monday by the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality for eastern Lane County as a result of smoke from the Middle Fork Complex fires burning in areas around Oakridge.
The areas most impacted by smoke, rising to the unhealthy level of air quality, are around Oakridge and Westfir, according to Travis Knudsen, a public affairs manager for the Lane Regional Air Protection Agency.
Knudsen said while Eugene and Springfield are still at good air quality, the air quality drops to moderate reaching areas east of Springfield in places such as Dexter Lake and Vida. ....

FALL CREEK, Ore. – Lane County Sheriff’ deputies are asking for the public’s help finding a missing kayaker.
Glenn Hornsby, 53, was at Fall Creek Reservoir on Monday at about 9 a.m. Just a couple hours later, he spoke to friends saying he would be home soon, but he never returned.
His family went to the Fall Creek area and found Hornsby’s vehicle along Big Fall Creek Road. ....

Willamette Valley dams: Ruling forces Corps to make changes for Salmon

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is being forced to make immediate and extensive changes to the way it operates the 13 dams in the Willamette Valley, including Detroit Dam, to give native species of fish a chance to survive.
Under an order from federal District Court Judge Marco Hernandez issued July 16, the Corps will be forced to take actions such as improving fish passage and water quality, deep drawdowns of water to allow juvenile fish to pass downstream, spilling water at different times of year, and releasing adult fish above the dams. Hernandez s order laid out broad actions; a later final judgment will contain specifics. ....
