Jails keep steady flow of bookings

Local weekend bookings saw a string of organized crime along with public intoxication and drug possession charges. Other charges rounding out the majority of weekend bookings in the area include theft, violation of Kentucky DVO/EPOs, failure to appear and contempt.

â¢ Austin T. Sweathomas, 20, of Ashland, was booked Friday on contempt of court and possession of marijuana.
â¢ Christy G. Wilson, 42, was jailed Friday on alcohol intoxication in a public place, third-degree terroristic threatening and fourth-degree assualt.
â¢ David S. McPeek, 39, of Catlettsburg, was lodged Friday on first-degree, first-offense possession of a controlled substance, buy or possess drug paraphernalia and two traffic violations. ....

Five people swept up in drug operation

RUSSELL The Tri-State Narcotics Task Force was at it again over the weekend, bringing five suspects into custody on various warrants, including drug distribution.
This is the second round of weekend busts, which have so far netted a quarter-pound of meth, smaller gram amounts of heroin, fentanyl and weed, $8,600 in cash, a vehicle and drug paraphernalia, according to DEA Assistant Special Agent in Charge Jack Sparks.
So far, eight people have been caught up in the dragnet, Sparks said.
Spanning Boyd and Greenup counties, drug officers assigned with the detail seized a mess of meth baggies, scales and cash, according to a release issued early Sunday morning. ....

WURTLAND The Singinâ Gatherinâ Old-Time Music Day will return at noon June 12, after a one-year hiatus because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The free event at the McConnell House will feature Kentucky Memories, a traditional music group including Keith Garvin, a volunteer with Greenup Arts and the Greenup County Extension Council. Garvinâs son, Michael, also plays in Kentucky Memories.
Families making music together is essential to the event. Also part of Kentucky Memories are their cousins, Philip Litteral, who plays guitar, and George Litteral, who plays banjo.
âFamilies playing music together is a local tradition and part of our local cultural heritage,â Anne Stephens, Greenup County Extension Agent for Fine Arts and Community Development, said. âWhen the Fraley family (also related to the Garvins and the Litterals) started the American Folk Song Festival, it was really a family reunion wit ....

A long procession slowly wound its way up the low hill leading to the Kentucky Veterans Cemetery North East. The procession was escorted by the Patriot Guard, a veteran-composed motorcycle group, whose sole purpose was to honor a fallen comrade.Â
The final journey had begun at Wurtland Middle School and made its way down the Industrial Parkway, and at each side road along the way emergency vehicles waited as a show of respect and, if need be, to block roads so that the procession would not be interrupted.
