Iowa DHS sees little success in prodding more employees to get COVID vaccine

Iowa Department of Human Services officials are trying a variety of approaches to encourage more employees at its six facilities to get the COVID-19 vaccine.
Reports show 36-percent of employees at DHS offices declined the shot as of May 7th. That’s the same percent that declined it five weeks before.
Director Kelly Garcia says they’ve hosted town halls with medical experts and union representatives to address vaccine concerns.
Garcia says, “What we’re hoping to do is that different people need different types of messaging, and a reason to kind of come on board.” Garcia says she did her best to address employee concerns directly at a recent town hall at Woodward Resource Center. ....

DHS officials say they are trying different approaches to encourage more employees to get vaccinated at their six facilities.
The Iowa Department of Human Services officials said they will continue efforts to encourage more employees at the six DHS facilities to get the COVID-19 vaccine, as vaccination rates remain stagnant.
According to state data, 36 percent of employees at DHS’s six facilities declined the COVID-19 shot as of last Friday. That’s the same percent that had declined it five weeks before. ....

State auditor opposes taxpayer financed settlement over sexual harassment allegations

State officials have approved a $135,000 settlement to a former state employee who alleged she was sexually harassed by her boss at the Woodward State Resource Center, the state-run facility for residents with intellectual disabilities.
The State Appeal Board approved the settlement yesterday, but State Auditor Rob Sand, a member of the board, voted no. He said the former supervisor who committed the harassment should be held accountable, not Iowa taxpayers.
“We need to be making efforts to change the way we handle these because if we do that, we can prevent sexual harassment and protect taxpayers,” Sand told Radio Iowa. “I’m not going to support the status quo.” ....

One housing unit closed at state-run facility for intellectually disabled
A house at the Glenwood Resource Center has been closed and the head of the state agency that oversees the facility says other units are being consolidated, to better manage staffing levels. The facility that cares for patients with intellectual disabilities is Glenwood’s largest employer. Department of Human Resources director Kelly Garcia said her agency got extra money a year ago to hire more staff.
“Despite our best efforts, we were unable to fill a bit more than a dozen employees that are direct care workers,” Garcia said.
Eight patients were in the housing unit that closed. Garcia said one “transitioned to the community” and the other seven were transferred to Woodward Resource Center, the other state-run facility that cares full-time for patients with intellectual disabilities. ....
