Tributes paid as popular nurse with Covid-19 dies


Tributes have been paid to a popular nurse who died with Covid-19 in hospital over the weekend.
Solson Payyappillil Saviour, a father-of-one, was described by his former colleagues as someone who was always “full of life”.
Gowran Abbey Nursing Home in Co Kilkenny said that he “lost his personal battle” with Covid-19 on Sunday at Wexford General Hospital.
Solson, originally from India, had worked at the nursing home for three years.

58 New Cases Of Covid 19 In Co. Wexford – 16 People Are Being Treated At Wexford General Hospital
58 new cases of Covid 19 have been recorded in Co. Wexford over the past twenty four hours.
The county’s 14 day incidence rate of the virus now stands at 390.1 per 100,000 population.  It’s the fifth highest nationwide.
1,866 people have been diagnosed with Covid 19 in Co. Wexford since the outbreak began in March of last year.  Case numbers are expected to be higher over the next ten days as a result of fewer people coming forward for testing over Christmas.
Over 500 cases of Covid 19 have been identified in Co. Wexford over the past two weeks.  The latest figures released by the HSE last night show New Ross had the highest incidence rate in Ireland at 998.6 per 100,000 population. ....

Hospital children's party embraces the great outdoors


The Wexford General Hospital children s Christmas party couldn t go ahead this year due to Covid, but St. John s Volunteers stepped in to save the day by organising a drive-through Santa grotto.
Coronavirus restrictions put paid to the party in the Ferrycarrig Hotel, which is organised annually by St. Gabriel s Paediatric Ward but the GAA Club ensured that children who have been patients in the hospital during 2020, were able to enjoy some festive cheer.
Paediatric diabetic nurse, Deirdre Bowers asked the club for help after coming into contact with committee members last summer when the Vols raised more than €9,000 for the children s diabetic unit with a 100-hour relay. ....

'Jem Roche was the father of boxing in Wexford'

But his childhood offered no indication of what was to come. The first of five children born to John and Mary (neé Moran) Roche, Jem attended the Christian Brothers School where a passion for another sport was nurtured.
An enthusiastic and skilled gaelic footballer, the teenager became a member of the Young Ireland s Gaelic Football Club and would go on to win a provincial title with the Selskar-based team.
This love of the round ball would continue throughout Jem s life and he was part of the backroom staff of Wexford s 1918 All-Ireland football champions. His other passion as a young man was music and he played trombone with the Holy Family Confraternity Brass and Reed Band in Wexford town. Upon leaving school Jem became an apprentice blacksmith at William Haughton s forge in Abbey Steet, moving on to work with Mike Carton in Scarawalsh and Willie Carroll in Cleariestown. ....
