Sarasota County opens a northern segment of the Legacy Trail

The Sarasota Springs Trailhead, at Webber Street and the Legacy Trail, and the Ashton Road Trailhead should both be open later this fall, along with the remainder of Segment 2.
The third trailhead, known as the Pompano Trailhead, which will be located near the Sarasota County Fairgrounds and will include 12 lighted pickleball courts and a community center, is scheduled to open the fall of 2022, along with Segment 3 and the North Port Connector.
Currently there are signalized at-grade crossings for the Legacy Trail at Clark Road and Beneva Road. In addition, there will be a signalized crossing at Tuttle Avenue.
The Florida Department of Transportation is designing overpasses for both Clark and Bee Ridge roads. The hope is for those to be built in 2024. ....

The city of Venice was named a Monarch City by Monarch City USA

VENICE – The city of Venice was recently named a Monarch City by the national organization Monarch City USA.
That means the city is committed to both preserving the monarch butterfly population, as well as fostering its growth.
Monarch City USA was created in 2015 in Maple Valley, Washington, according to its website.
It is a nonprofit corporation under the Washington State Department of Revenue.
The organization strongly encourages municipalities across the United States to directly help the monarch butterfly population recover through planting milkweed and nectar plants within their boundaries.
Nearly a billion monarch butterflies have vanished since 1990, according to data from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Monarchs are critical to nature because they pollinate plants, helping grow many foods humans and animals rely upon. ....
