PRINGLE, Pa. Students in Luzerne County put their cooking skills to the test to bring attention to food insecurity.
Culinary Arts and Machine Shop students at West Side Career Tech in Pringle participated in a contest Thursday.
The object was to create the best meals with food pantry items. It is to set up for the future so that the students have food resources. This is a way to introduce food to the students, it is available to them so they have fresh things to cook with at home, said culinary instructor Heidi Miller.

HUNLOCK CREEK, Pa. Families in Luzerne County caught a flick or two at a drive-in to help raise money for the less fortunate.
The theme at the Garden Drive-in near Shickshinny was throwback Thursday, with a double feature of Smokey and the Bandit and the Big Lebowski.
For $7 people could watch their classic favorites.
All the ticket proceeds from the showings will be donated to the Weinberg Northeast Regional Food Bank.
KINGSTON â The Al Beech West Side Food Pantry used to be a small operation utilizing the stage of a church, but COVID-19 has increased need so much it has turned into a sophisticated drive-thru operation catering to hundreds of families from all over Northeast Pennsylvania.
The Commission for Economic Opportunity, which supplies much of the food distributed, has delivered 73 percent more food to local food banks this year compared to last year.
âIf you compare 2019 to 2020, the amount of food weâd go through in an entire month is now gone in two to three hours of distribution,â said Clancy Harrison, a dietician who is the volunteer president of the food pantry and founder of the nonprofit Food Dignity Project.
