Farmers Market assists low-income buyers with SNAP benefits in Weymouth

Purchases at the weekly Weymouth Farmers Market by residents with SNAP or Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program cards have soared since the seasonal open-air shop opened at Weymouth High School on June 20.
Market Manager Casey Tocchio said there was a 68% increase by customers with SNAP or Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program cards on June 27.
“It was our best day in SNAP sales since we began the program in 2015,” she said.
The SNAP or federal Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program helps residents with low to moderate incomes to buy food at the Farmers Market or any grocery store.

Weymouth Food Pantry receives $2.2K in Community Spirit Grants

Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Foundation recently announced Weymouth Food Pantry was awarded $2,200 from the Foundation’s Community Spirit 9/11 Mini-Grant program.
Four employees of Harvard Pilgrim Health Care and Health Plans Inc. nominated the organization for the award. Funds will be used to purchase healthy, nutritious food for the Weymouth community.
To commemorate those Harvard Pilgrim members who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001, Harvard Pilgrim and the Foundation created the Community Spirit 9/11 Mini-Grant program. This program allows each Harvard Pilgrim employee to award a $500 grant, completely funded by the foundation, to the local charity of his or her choice each calendar year. Since the community grants program began in 2002, Harvard Pilgrim employees have directed more than $7 million to thousands of organizations throughout Connecticut, Maine, Massachusett ....

Food Banks Raise Alarm Over Child Hunger Crisis as the Pandemic Continues

More than 50 million people in America, including 17 million children, are likely to have food insecurity by the end of the year, according to Feeding America, the country s largest anti-hunger organization.
According to NBC News, that amounts to one in six Americans and one in four children, which is an increase of almost 50 percent over last year.
President and CEO of the Greater Boston Food Bank, Catherine D Amato, said in her 40 years of working in food banks, the need has never been greater.
D Amato noted that she had seen many disasters, including hurricanes and floods, but they have never seen it so pervasive with every city, state, and country involved. ....
