Local snowboard cross racer Connor Schlegel makes the jump to pro team

Special to the Daily
VAIL – Local Connor Schlegel was hoping to get nominated to the U.S. Snowboard Team’s snowboardcross development team this spring.
Instead, he was surprised to learn he had skipped the development team level altogether, and was nominated directly to the pro team.
For an athlete who has only one World Cup start on his stat sheet, it is a big leap.
“I was pretty blown away,” he said.
But Schlegel says he’s excited to take on the challenge.
After growing up on the Front Range and showing talent for snowboardcross at a young age, Schlegel moved in with his grandparents in Eagle County during his teenage years and began attending the Vail Ski & Snowboard Academy, where he graduated in 2020. He says snowboardcross racing is the main topic of conversation around the dinner table with his grandparents, who have become close observers of the sport. ....

Colorado COVID-19 Outbreaks Spike in Supposedly Safe Places

Among the first Coloradans to be vaccinated against COVID-19 were residents and employees of nursing homes and other senior-care centers in the state. But while these efforts initially seemed to be eliminating outbreaks at such facilities, that s clearly not the case. The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment has reported nearly 100 outbreaks at health-care sites in the past two weeks, with the category surpassing outbreaks at K-12 schools for the first time in months.
The CDPHE considers an entity an outbreak after two or more COVID-19 cases among residents, staffers or other people connected to a specific location are confirmed within a fourteen-day period, or two or more cases of respiratory illness with an onset of symptoms within a fourteen-day period are paired with at least one additional COVID-19 diagnosis. The vast majority of businesses and facilities identified as outbreaks remain open while working with the department to monitor symptoms and prevent ....

Janet Bartnik, Geoffrey Grimmer appointed to Eagle Town Council

EAGLE Eagle Town Council finalized its appointment of two new council members Tuesday, formally appointing Janet Bartnik and Geoffrey Grimmer to fill two seats left vacant by the deaths of Adam Palmer and Andy Jessen in an avalanche near Silverton in early February.
Bartnik and Grimmer were among 19 people who applied for possible appointment to the Town Council to fill the two seats, and were among the eight applicants council members interviewed during a four-hour work session last week.
Other applicants interviewed were Jaimie Mackey, Erinn Hoban, Sarah Parrish, Brian Bloess, Josh Stowell and Kevin Brubeck.
“It goes without saying we would be in great shape with any two of the eight. We are fortunate to have so many great people step forward,” Eagle Mayor Scott Turnipseed said at Tuesday’s meeting. “This is one of the hardest things we have to do as a council, especially given these circumstances, and I just want to say thank you to everybody for stepping ....

8 applicants make pitches to Eagle Town Council

Applicants for the two open seats on the Eagle Town Council each touched on a variety of issues in the small but growing town in their interviews. Those issues included supporting small businesses and recruiting new businesses, improving internet services, attracting younger people and families to town, helping older residents age in place, providing more affordable housing, protecting the environment, and enhancing outdoor recreation opportunities and quality of life.
