BENNINGTON — John Shannahan, the longtime executive director of the Better Bennington Corporation, has decided to step down from the post.
John Shannahan, longtime executive director of the Better Bennington Corporation, said Thursday that he has decided to step down from the position.Jim Therrien
His decision was announced Thursday in a release from Susan Plaisance, president of the BBC board.
Michael McDonough, also a member of the board, has accepted the position of interim executive director of the organization, which supports and promotes the downtown and its businesses.
The officials said the change comes as Bennington’s downtown is emerging from the difficult year of the COVID-19 pandemic with new and existing businesses expressing optimism and confidence in the future. ....

MONTPELIER — The Vermont Downtown Board has allocated $498,320 in grants to Brattleboro, Middlebury, Montpelier, Newport, Poultney, Springfield and St Albans for projects aimed at improving the safety, access, and comfort for people walking and riding bicycles in downtowns.
Josh Hanford, chair of the Downtown Board and Commissioner of the Department of Housing and Community Development, said increasing public investments in our downtowns are now more important than ever. “As more and more Vermonters get vaccinated, these types of access improvements are just what our downtowns need to help draw people back to local businesses and rebuild community life harmed by the pandemic.” ....
