Were it not for a freelance journalist, we never would have known where to place our outrage.
Chet and Connie Hawkins died in the head-on crash, after Seward, who was 16 at the time, crossed the double yellow-line, striking them.
Seward received a civil traffic ticket for an offense listed as “driving on roadways laned for traffic.” She pleaded no contest to the civil traffic ticket and was assessed $220 by the Vermont Judicial Bureau. ....

Teen driver in double-fatal crash charged with $220 fine


A teenage driver has been fined $220 for her part in a double-fatal car crash that killed an elderly Addison County couple last September in Charlotte.
Public records show Isabel Jennifer Seward, who comes from a prominent Atlanta family, received a Vermont civil traffic ticket for an offense listed as “driving on roadways laned for traffic.”
Seward pleaded no contest to the civil traffic ticket and was assessed $220 by the Vermont Judicial Bureau, court records show.
They also show Seward’s mother paid the fine.
Seward, who turned 17 last week, provided at least 3 conflicting stories about her cell phone leading up to and after the crash near Church Hill Road on Sept. 8, according to the Vermont State Police accident report. ....

BURLINGTON — A Vermont Superior Court judge agreed Friday to conduct a trial in late January about whether municipal clerks must keep offices open to the public in need of access to government records during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Nine Vermont municipalities — ranging from tiny Whiting in Addison County to bustling South Burlington in Chittenden County — are named in a lawsuit that maintains they are among a large number of communities that have made it impossible or difficult to get access to important land records required for real estate sales.
The plaintiff, the Connecticut Attorneys Title Insurance Co. in South Burlington, maintains that various lawyers need full access to the public records to complete research for real estate deals in communities throughout Vermont. The lack of access can block buyers and sellers and those trying to refinance. ....
