It s been a tough year for health care workers. Now, two nurses on the frontlines of the pandemic in California are celebrating new life and their first Mother s Day.
Bea Joe and Racquelle Thieling enjoy snuggling with their new babies Sloane and Hudson after a year of highs and lows.
“Now, I know when people say it s love at first sight, and you re just filled with all this love,” Thieling said.
“It s very rewarding to be a parent, to be a mother, and to have done this through COVID,” Joe said. ....

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, life was plenty busy for Jason Trujillo and his family.
He and his wife, Sherrie Jong, had two children, ages 4 and 1. Jong a civil engineer was the family’s breadwinner as Trujillo completed his first year at Southwestern Law School in Los Angeles. As the couple raised their family and juggled work and school, Jong’s parents, Engie and Monty, were getting older; 82-year-old Monty especially struggled to see and hear.
When they found out Monty had Alzheimer’s disease, the family knew he needed someone to care for him. That job fell to Trujillo. At first, he resented the stressful and unexpected role. But his mother helped him put things in perspective. “She said, ‘I didn’t raise you to leave an old man that needs help. Take care of this,’” he recalls. “She was 100% right.” ....

CULVER CITY, CA The U.S. has reached what health officials have called a complicated stage of the COVID-19 pandemic, with cases and hospitalizations increasing in some parts of the country despite the quickening pace of vaccination.
Nationally, the seven-day average of new cases, which had fallen steadily from its peak of nearly 250,000 in January, is rising again, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said. Over the week ending April 14, new cases averaged 69,577 8.1 percent higher than during the previous week, when the seven-day average stood at 64,340. More than 31.2 million cases of COVID-19 have been reported since the pandemic began. ....
