Americana and normalcy are expected to be on full display in September when the Hesperia Days Parade and Celebration returns after the coronavirus pandemic canceled last year’s festivities.
This year will mark the 72nd edition of the event that first began in 1948 when 13-year-old Lillian (Stratton) Platt, wore the crown as the first Miss Hesperia and rodeo queen.
Hesperia Recreation and Park District General Manager Nicolas Chavez, who was hired in July 2020 and missed out on his first Hesperia Days experience, said the popular two-day event is slated to begin Sept. 18 with a full day of activities. ....

A faded Marie Callender’s sign stood near a pile of rubble that contained the remains of the old restaurant which was demolished this week to make way for the High Desert’s first Chick-fil-A.
On Tuesday, a work crew began razing the nearly 30-year-old building on the property located on Mariposa Road in Victorville, said Paul Emery, the owner of Emery Concrete & Asphalt Recycling in Hesperia.
“The building will be gone and down to the slab by the end of the week,” Emery, 57, told the Daily Press on Tuesday. ....
