NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas — Victor Villanueva risked his life alongside a stranger from Seguin to rescue his children from the dangerous waters of the Guadalupe River.
He and that stranger are now being remembered for their heroic actions.
Villanueva loved the water. “That was his happy place,” said Norma Luna, widow of Villanueva.
Luna describes Villanueva as funny, the life of the party and a hard worker who cared deeply for his family. She also brags about Villanueva’s masterful fishing skills, which he passed on to his three sons.

Searchers find pair of bodies in Guadalupe River

The search for a missing swimmer ended Monday with authorities locating a 30-year-old Guadalupe County manâs body about a mile from where he entered the Guadalupe River.
Members of the New Braunfels Fire Department dive team searched Monday well into the afternoon with no luck in finding the man who disappeared under the water after saving two childrenâs lives on Sunday near the FM 1117 bridge, Guadalupe County Capt. John Koch said.
An expanded, coordinated search by multiple agencies was needed to find the body of Victor Villanueva, Guadalupe County Sheriffâs Sgt. Kelly Mann said on Monday.
Divers found 22-year-old Casandra Kendrickâs body underwater in the Guadalupe River about 8:44 p.m. Sunday after she and Villanueva were reported missing following the successful effort of saving the manâs children from drowning, Mann said.

SEGUIN, Texas (AP) — Searchers recovered the body Monday of a second person drowned after he and a woman were swept away after rescuing two children from a Texas river, officials said.
The body of Victor Villanueva, 30, was recovered Monday afternoon from the Guadalupe River about a mile downstream from where he went missing, Guadalupe Sheriff's Sgt. Kelly Mann said. The body of Casandra Kendrick, 22, was found Sunday night.
Both vanished after saving two children struggling against the current in the popular swimming and tubing river near Seguin, about 35 miles (56.33 kilometers) northeast of San Antonio. Kendrick had helped Villanueva rescue the children and was trying to save Villanueva, but the water kept pushing them downriver, the sheriff's office said.
