Ex-Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt says the UK is beginning to look weak and is being pushed around over its failure to protect Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe.
The British-Iranian dual national has been detained in Iran since 2016, when she was sentenced to five years in prison over allegations of plotting to overthrow the Iranian government.

Iranian officials claim the 42-year-old charity administrator, who worked for the Thomson Reuters Foundation, had been training people to spread propaganda against the country while running a BBC Persian online journalism course. She denies the allegations. ....

UK 'starting to look weak' over Zaghari-Ratcliffe: Ex-FM

LONDON: The UK “is beginning to look weak” over its failure to protect citizens imprisoned in Iran such as Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, former Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt has said.
Zaghari-Ratcliffe, a 42-year-old British-Iranian dual national, has been detained in Iran since 2016, when she was sentenced to five years in prison on trumped-up charges of plotting to overthrow the regime.
Despite being afforded diplomatic protection by the UK, she has not been visited or advised by British authorities since her arrest.
Hunt said for diplomatic protection to have meaning, “there had to be consequences for Tehran.”
He added: “It is not clear to me that there have been any; something that is beginning to make us look weak. ....

Lawyers for Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe have been told by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) that the British government is not a statutory safeguarding body, nor does it have a legal duty of care to British nationals overseas .
Senior MPs, including former Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt, have criticised the FCDO s assertion.
Writing to Nazanin s lawyers, Sarah Broughton, the FCDO s head of consular services, said there was no legal right to protection and that all cases, including Nazanin s, were treated on a discretionary basis. ....

UK Foreign Office: Political Prisoner Zaghari-Ratcliffe Has "No Legal Right" to Our Help

The UK Foreign Office says it does not have to assist Anglo-Iranian political prisoner Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe (pictured), detained since April 2016 in Iran.
In a letter delivered to Zaghari-Ratcliffe’s lawyers, the Foreign Office said British citizens arrested overseas have no right to help or protection, even if they are tortured or held as diplomatic leverage.
The lawyers had asked the Foreign Office to set out the Government’s view of its obligations.
Sarah Broughton, head of consular affairs, responded, “British citizens falsely accused overseas have no legal right to consular assistance.”
She added that, despite a UN finding that Zaghari-Ratcliffe’s treatment in prison amounts torture, the UK Government “cannot investigate torture or mistreatment allegations”. ....
