Local business leaders rail against KCDC, DFI budget cuts in ad and comments to the city

Last month, the Franklin County Fiscal Court decided to cut its funding of the Kentucky Capital Development Corporation (KCDC) by $15,000 for a second year straight.
After not cutting KCDC last year, the city caught up with the county for this yearâs proposed budget, as it slashed the organizationâs funding by $30,000. It also cut funding for Downtown Frankfort Inc. (DFI) by $45,500.
An item of consideration for the countyâs decision regarding KCDC was a letter penned by Jim Daniel, James Inman and other âconcerned citizens,â sent to elected officials in May. That letter was critical of KCDCâs productivity, direction and integrity; it particularly honed in on KCDC President/CEO Terri Bradshawâs performance.Â ....

Barber wins Chamber's Community and Civic Leadership Award

Frankfort Independent Schools Superintendent Houston Barber, who wears numerous hats in the community, received the Frankfort Area Chamber of Commerceâs Community and Civic Leadership Award on Thursday.
In addition to leading the school district, Barber, a graduate of Marquette University, serves as president-elect of the Kentucky Association for School Superintendents; vice chair of Kentucky Capital Development Corp.; board member of Bluegrass State Skills Corp.; and co-chair of the board of managers for the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce Institute for School Principals.
He also mentors new school superintendents through the Kentucky Association for School Administrators and was tapped to serve on the Kentucky Education and Workforce Development transition team by Gov. Andy Beshear. ....

Sturgeon wins Danny A. Garland Humanitarian Award

âMy father would be so honored and humbled to receive this award, and I wish he could have been here to accept it rather than myself, but God had other plans,â Krista Sturgeon, his daughter, said in a speech on behalf of the family, including his wife, Pam, and son, Ryan.
Before he stepped into the fiscal court room, Don Sturgeon spent 42 years in the classroom as a teacher at Franklin County High School.
âAs an educator, he respected his students and found ways to motivate them. In doing so he earned the respect of his students, which later turned into respect for fellow citizens and community leaders,â said Clay Hulette, Frankfort president of First Federal Savings Bank of Kentucky, who presented the Humanitarian Award. ....
