Twelve area volunteers won local Jefferson Awards. Local sponsors include Husky Energy, Your Hometown Stations, The Lima News and United Way of Greater Lima. One winner, announced Thursday night during a virtual event online, will represent the region in the national awards event.

Local legends such as Walter Potts, Frank Lamar, Jessie Pope and Estella Cooper influenced O’Neal. He learned from an early age the power of helping people, deeply ingrained from years of watching his mother, Jacqueline O’Neal, impact so many lives through Allen County Head Start. ....

Frank Lamar was at home Wednesday afternoon when news broke that the nation’s Capitol was under siege. He sat in front of his TV, stunned by what he was seeing.
“I couldn’t believe it. This was not my America. It was not the United States,” he said.
At age 89, the highly respected Black leader in Lima said he’s lived through many historic events, but this one was unimaginable.
“The president of the United States inflamed that mob. It was under his direction that they were reacting,” Lamar said. ....

The former LaMar Hotel was built in 1891 at 333 Grandville Avenue SW, Grand Rapids. It was constructed in order to be both a three-story hotel and grocery stop for travelers passing through.
On the ground floor was the Horseshoe Bar and Blues Club. This was one of THE places to hang out from the 1940s through the 1970s. Not just a hotel, bar, restaurant, and grocery, but former Club owner Frank LaMar Sr. also had his own prostitute business on the third floor.
As for ghostly occurrences, there have been reports of apparitions, unexplained cold spots, doors unlock & lock themselves, footsteps, odd handprints, items moving by themselves, lights that flicker, strange sounds, and weird odors - most prominently the scent of old perfume. ....
