While facing intense rain and protests on January 27 and 28, California Highway Patrol officers and California Dept. of Transportation (CalTrans) workers cleared tents, trash, broken branches, and homeless people from a tract of CalTrans-owned land that sits between Mosswood Park and the 580 Freeway in North Oakland.
CalTrans referred to the operation as a cleaning. Activists, local civil rights lawyers, and the site’s residents called it an eviction. Two residents successfully resisted being removed from the site and stayed on the tract of land. ....

Despite pandemic eviction bans, people are still losing their homes
Brooks Jarosz reports about the precarious position of California tenants who are on the verge of losing protections against evictions during the pandemic.
Jean Kendrick, and her son, Stanley Jackson, who has a disability, are currently without a home during a global pandemic.
They were recently evicted from their apartment in Richmond, and now live in an extended-stay hotel. The room they’re in is uncomfortable, and they can’t afford it.
We’re about ready to run out of money, Kendrick said. ....

Alameda County to request exemption from counting homeless population

Alameda County to request exemption from counting homeless population
Nirvana Ellaboudy/File
According to EveryOne Home staff, the spread of COVID-19 in Alameda County has led to health concerns and barriers for acquiring an accurate and reliable count of the homeless population. The count is usually recorded in January every two years.
As a result of COVID-19 concerns, Alameda County will request a waiver not to conduct its biennial, federally mandated count of homeless residents this year.
According to EveryOne Home, an organization aimed at ending homelessness in Alameda County, the count aims to help determine funding, measure changes in the population, improve services, and assess subpopulations including veterans, families, unaccompanied children and more. The data is normally collected through a point-in-time count by EveryOne Home; however, the organization noted concerns due to the current state of the pandemic. ....
