Ketchikan's Borough Assembly to consider raises, new positions at Monday's meeting

After approving an $18,000 raise for its manager, Ketchikan’s Borough Assembly is considering another raise for its senior leadership and adding some new positions. All told, borough staff are asking for roughly $550,000 for salaries and benefits. About $150,000 of that is not in the existing budget.
The first request in a staff memo comes for the borough’s second-in-command. The assistant borough manager’s post is currently vacant. Borough officials say they’d like to move the assistant manager to the highest pay scale the change would raise the maximum salary to about $156,000 per year. That’d be a $30,000 increase. ....

SCHOOL risk levels on Board agenda


The Ketchikan School Board is set to meet on Wednesday evening to hear the latest information from the acting superintendent about the Ketchikan School District s COVID-19 risk level assignments.
A COVID-19 outbreak in the community two weeks ago led to a surge in cases last week, many connected to students and staff at Ketchikan High School.
The district closed Kayhi to in-person instruction last week, but at the board s direction did not close other secondary schools in the district.
At the conclusion of an emergency board meeting last Wednesday, the board directed Acting Superintendent Katie Parrott to set Smart Start coronavirus risk levels for individual schools, rather than using one metric for the entire district. ....

Ketchikan’s departing superintendent will receive more than $80,000 for resigning. Ketchikan’s school board ratified the lump sum payment equal to 130 days of pay and benefits at its regular meeting Wednesday. The board also approved a budget for next school year and discussed the search for an interim superintendent.
The stated purpose of an $80,624 payment to departing Ketchikan Superintendent Beth Lougee remains unanswered. School Board President Kim Hodne called the agreement to a vote quickly and without comment. ....

The governor and legislative leaders have agreed on a rough plan to use federal pandemic relief from Congress to help stabilize Alaska’s beleaguered ferry system.
Gov. Mike Dunleavy and lawmakers say a nearly $77 million windfall would allow the state to fund the Alaska Marine Highway System for the next year and a half. The governor visited Ketchikan on Thursday and discussed his proposal. ....
