Many Twin Cities nature centers are getting makeovers as officials remodel or rebuild aging structures to adapt to programming changes and a growing demand for environmental education.
From Richfield to West St. Paul, the construction projects are yielding or will soon yield buildings that showcase sustainable design or add classrooms to help more kids and adults connect to nature.
Some nature centers, particularly older ones, need updates, said Jen Levy, executive director of the Association of Nature Center Administrators. ....

In a virtual ceremony held Dec. 4, seven Honor Awards and three Framework for Design Excellence Commendations were announced by the American Institute of Architects Minnesota.
The annual awards program dates to 1954 and recognizes outstanding built projects by AIA Minnesota members, or firms that are owned by AIA Minnesota members, that practice professionally in Minnesota.
The commendations, new in 2020, recognize submissions that excel in one of 10 categories: integration, equitable communities, ecosystems, water, economy, energy, well-being, resources, change and discovery. ....

St. Louis Park updates park and rec rules following governor's order | Free

On Dec. 16, Gov. Tim Walz issued Executive Order 20-103 extending and modifying the previous four-week dial back on certain activities, set to expire Dec. 18. In accordance with this executive order to slow the spread of COVID-19, St. Louis Park parks and recreation facilities and programs will begin operating as follows beginning Saturday, Dec. 19:
â¢ Outdoor ice rinks will open when ice is safe for skating. Crews have been working since mid-December to flood the rinks; temperatures will affect when safe ice is available for skating.
â¢ Warming houses will not be open. Benches will be placed outside warming houses for rink users. ....
