LinkedIn: India Inc is cutting hiring but spending on retention — Quartz India

With a raging pandemic potentially threatening their business prospects, Indian companies are putting extra efforts into employee retention.
In line with companies across the Asia Pacific region, Indian firms have increased their spending on employee engagement and wellbeing, and training and development, among other measures that can help in staff retention, according to a survey by LinkedIn. The increase in budget for current employees comes at a time when companies in the Asia Pacific region have cut hiring spends by around 30% due to an “uncertain business outlook,” the survey said.
The findings are based on a quantitative 20-minute online survey filled by over 3,500 small, medium, and large companies across Australia, China, India, Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Singapore. ....

The unemployment rate declined to 6.5 per cent in January 2021 from 9.1 per cent in December 2020, while the employment rate surged to 37.9 per cent as compared to 36.9 per cent, says CMIE

The year 2021 started on positive note for India as it recorded a significant fall in the unemployment rate and an equally impressive increase in employment rate in January, according to private think tank CMIE. Employment in India, however, remained lower than it was before the pre-COVID levels, but there were lesser unemployed people willing to work as well, it said. ....

India s job market is on a road to recovery, with most of the sectors restoring many jobs that were lost due to coronavirus pandemic-led nationwide lockdown, raising hopes that the worst may be over. Mitigating the impact of lockdown, most of the sectors, including agriculture, services, real estate and construction, have seen some recovery in terms of employment, but jobs have moved from higher labour productivity sector to those with low productivity, says private think-tank CMIE. ....
