Family whose VW car went up in flames, settles damages case for €60,000

A judge has approved settlements totalling €60,000 damages for three children who had to evacuate from their burning family car and watch on the roadside with their parents as the vehicle was destroyed in a fire.
Judge John O’Connor heard in the Circuit Civil Court that the children and their parents had been travelling in their father’s new Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace car when Pierre Ennis noticed a burning smell coming from the front right of the vehicle.
Barrister David Murray, counsel for the three children, told the court Mr Ennis, of Wadelai Green, Glasnevin, Dublin 11, had pulled over to investigate what was happening and noticed flames under the vehicle. ....

Motor trade seeks route back from double whammy of 2020

Covid has clobbered the motor trade, with new car sales down 26pc in 2020. With dealerships closed once again the outlook for 2021 remains uncertain.
With most of us having spent the last nine months under virtual house arrest, new car sales took a hammering in 2020 - only 84,300 units were shifted, down over a quarter on the 113,300 sold in 2019. Second-hand imports fell even more sharply in 2020, down by 28pc to 78,500.
The Irish motor trade won t forget 2020 in a hurry. Since the first lockdown in March dealerships have endured repeated closures. On its own this would have been traumatic enough but it was happening at the same time as Brexit is upending the second-hand car trade - almost half of all the cars registered for the first time in 2020, 48pc, were used imports from the UK. ....

New car sales were down 26.5 per cent over the first 10 days of this year, hit by Covid restrictions and delays due to the administration of new Brexit rules.
In what is traditionally the busiest sales month of the year, 9,765 new cars were registered in the Republic by January 10th, down 3,523 on the same period last year.
The latest Covid-19 lockdown means dealer showrooms are closed, with sales restricted to click-and-deliver operations, although servicing departments remain open. Most of the new cars registered would have been on order by customers from the end of last year. ....
