VUE President: Vaccines For Teachers Over 50 A Step In The Right Direction

DeLand, FL - Getting the COVID-19 vaccine for all Volusia County Schools teachers is something that their union, Volusia United Educators (VUE), has been working on since the vaccine became available. VUE President Elizabeth Albert said it s a step in the right direction but it s obviously not enough. Albert said that everyone in our schools is at higher risk just by showing up to work each day because schools are not built for social distancing. We know we have issues with folks following the mandatory face-covering policy and not everyone has had access to the vaccine but definitely a step in the right direction. The Volusia County School District sent out an email on Monday (March 1) at around 9 p.m. to the teachers who became eligible after Governor Ron DeSantis issued the executive order making teachers, law enforcement, and firefighters over the age of 50 eligible for the vaccine. ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – A growing number of Central Florida schools have requested state officials to allow teachers to be the next priority group to get a COVID-19 vaccine.
Elizabeth Albert, President of Volusia United Educators said the teachers union and Volusia Public Schools are working together to ensure teachers are next in line for the vaccine.

DeLand, FL - Teachers and other school staff that interact with students should be eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine. So says Volusia United Educators (VUE) President Elizabeth Albert. She made that argument to the Volusia County School Board (VCSB) during yesterday s (January 12) meeting. Albert said she is encouraging all educational professionals to reach out to the Governor and the Commissioner of Education to share their desire to be in the target group. She says teachers are considered essential.sometimes. It seems like it depends on the desired outcome. We re essential workers when we want to open the schools so people can get back to work but we re not essential workers when it comes to the ability to have the vaccination so that we can stay safe. A resolution creating a Volusia County School District Police Department, announced last week, is on the agenda. District 5 School Board member Ruben Colon says the agenda item may get pulled for further discussion. VCS, VUE Reach Agreement – Avoid Impasse Hearing

DeLand, FL - The Volusia County School District and Volusia United Educators are in agreement regarding the Teacher Salary Allocation. The agreement comes after two months of bargaining and a declaration of impasse by the district on November 17. In a press release today (December 18), the district gave information on the agreement: The minimum teacher salary will be increased to $44,335. All teachers will receive a minimum of a 2.5% salary increase. Eligible teachers will receive longevity bonus in addition to the salary increase based on the previous MOU which will be included in the January 29, 2021 paycheck. Salary increases will be retroactive to July 1, 2020. Next steps: The ratification process will take place in the beginning of January. Notice will be provided.
