PNG workers stage strike protest
Power blackouts are being experienced across Papua New Guinea as workers of PNG Power stage a sit-in protest today.
The
Post Courier newspaper reports the president of the Energy Workers Union, Eddie Gisa, saying workers are asking the board and management of PNG Power and the government to address their demands set out in a petition handed to the board on Wednesday.
The paper reports the managing director of PNG Power, Flagon Bekker, addressed the workers this morning outside their headquarters in Hohola promising to look into their grievances and appealing to them to return to work. ....

Vanuatu police and immigration staff implicated in illegal procurement of documents
Over 90 Law Enforcement Officers in Vanuatu have been accused of involvement in an alleged illegal procurement of immigration documents .
The Vanuatu Daily Post estimates the illegal activity could have lost the government nearly 200 thousand U dollars in lost revenue.
Operation, named India Delta, has involved police and immigration officers.
A spokesman for the operation says the scheme is ongoing and his investigators are searching homes and offices for false documents and forging equipment or tools.
Cook Islands environmental group suggests using an Asian grass to absorb water treatment chemicals and save the streams ....

PNG scales down Covid-19 testing
Papua New Guinea s National Control Centre has decided to scale down testing for Covid-19 and focus on rolling out the vaccination programme.
PNG has reported over 17,000 confirmed cases of the virus since the pandemic began a year and a half ago. Only around 132,000 tests have been conducted.
The Controller of the National Pandemic Response, Police Commissioner David Manning said testing would continue but mainly at health facility settings.
He said Covid-19 is already in the country, thus it is better to continue to implement containment strategies and bolster efforts with the available vaccines. ....

The Pacific Islands News Association has paid tribute to media workers covering the COVID-19 pandemic, recognising their commitment and the “great sacrifice” they have made.           
In a statement made to mark 2021 World Press Freedom Day today, PINA notes that while “our health workers have been rightfully recognised as ‘frontliners’ in the fight against COVID19, the critical frontline efforts of our media workers in bringing much-needed information and news to our people has been largely forgotten.” 
“Much like our health sector colleagues, our media workers go about their daily work, also at high personal risk and exposure to this virus, but with the unwavering desire to inform and educate our people,” PINA says. ....
