Columbia businesses prepare differently for expiring health order


COLUMBIA - Starting Wednesday, businesses in Columbia will be able to set their own restrictions regarding masks and social distancing. 
Health orders will expire May 12 at 11:59 a.m. KOMU 8 talked to nine businesses on what their next steps are.
Boone County Health Director Stephanie Browning and Columbia Mayor Brian Treece announced last week that the city would not extend the current health order after it expires at 11:59 a.m. on May 12. This is due to declining COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations. 
The Columbia/Boone County Health Department said it will give recommendations rather than orders. 
“Wearing masks, social distancing, and avoiding mass gatherings are still the best ways to keep our loved ones safe, Browning said at the briefing last week. We ll keep working on education and vaccination. ....

Columbia prepares for first of 3 graduation weekends for MU


COLUMBIA Columbia is preparing to host thousands of people for the first of three different graduation weekends for the University of Missouri.
Mizzou Arena and the Hearnes Center will host the ceremonies for the Class of 2020 this weekend, April 24-25. May and August graduates from the Class of 2021 will be celebrated over two different weekends in May. Columbia College will also host graduation at Mizzou Arena on Saturday, May 1.

Return of Bird Scooters threatens accessibility for some

Sometimes the scooters land in their designated parking spaces, tucked away in bike racks and sidewalk spaces. But often, they end up discarded in alleys or in the path of pedestrians.
The Birds, last seen in Columbia in November 2019, come with a set of regulations listed in the Bird app. Riders must wear a helmet, park in designated spaces, carry a valid driver’s license and stay on the road and off sidewalks.
A Friday morning walk up Ninth Street in Columbia showed these regulations are often ignored. Helmet-less riders cruised up and down the downtown sidewalks. A truck parking in an alley nearly crushed an improperly-parked scooter. Despite designated parking zones being set up, scooters were still seen on and in the middle of many sidewalks. ....
