Tuesday 23 February 2021 THE EDITOR: Following my previous reviews, I believe that the virtual offerings from our soca artistes and certain calypsonians during the Carnival 2021 period are still credible but only so much. There is determination though enduring success still awaits. TT should give them an “A” for effort. The problem is that more than effort is needed. First of all, our artistes need to see themselves not only vying for a home-based feteing audience but as competitors in international show business. In other words, they have to think about events that will have as many elements of entertainment as possible. ....
An oasis in the covid19 desert Thursday 18 February 2021 THE EDITOR: At a time when Trinidadians and Tobagonians were steeped in anticipation of the yearly catharsis that is the bacchanal of Carnival came a pandemic that stopped the greatest street festival on Earth. The impact of no mas not only dulled the enthusiasm of the local population but left those in the diaspora out in the cold and denied them their annual pilgrimage to bask in two epic days of revelry in the burning sun. But just as the people of this small country created the steel pan, the only musical instrument developed in the 20th century, these innovative people found ways to celebrate Carnival within the covid19 desert. ....
Public Service Announcement: Check on your Trininadian friends. Check on all of your Caribbean friends. They re not OK. Because for perhaps the first time in Caribbean history, that time of year has rolled around and the unthinkable has become real: Trinidad Carnival. Is. Cancelled. To understand the appalling gravitas of this situation, try to imagine the cancellation of, say, Christmas. Or, broadly speaking, the event holy public ritual, really that motivates tens of thousands of people around the world to keep on keeping on amid the daily drudgeries and mundane indignities of this nine-to-five life, because they know that come February, there shall be an ecstatic release: They will be covered in oil or paint, drink in hand, shimmering costume on deck, dancing through the streets of Port of Spain and giving thanks for a life that is a grand gift wholly drugged by music, dance, joy and love. ....
Holy Name Convent concert flies free Shal Marshall entertains with some of his popular hits. - WHILE the energetic performances by the stars at Holy Name Convent’s virtual cooler fete could not fully replicate the vibe and physicality of a fete, attendees were pleased with the atmosphere of the two-hour event. Flight of the Virtual Phoenix III drew over 400 viewers on Sunday. The show was streamed live from the school’s Marian Hall. The process of entering the virtual venue was smooth, as was the interaction with the tents where attendees could see videos from sponsors NLCB, Lemon Lime and Bitters, and The Security Zone being played on what looked like big-screen TVs. They could also take quizzes based on the school and its history over the last 119 years. ....
The Virtual Phoenix flies at Holy Name Nailah Blackman - NOTHING is going to keep Holy Name Convent’s, Port of Spain The Flight of the Virtual Phoenix down, like its Greek namesake. Not even covid19. The Flight of the Virtual Phoenix III: the at home edition – its annual Carnival fundraiser – will take place on Sunday from 6 pm-8 pm. The school’s acting vice principal Sr Renee Hall said the school had no bazaar last year because of the pandemic – one of its major fundraising activities. When its biennial art sale came in April of that year, its committee decided to host it virtually. ....
