Lockdown extended in Shillong as cases mount | Guwahati News

SHILLONG: Lockdown in the entire East Khasi Hills district, which includes state capital Shillong, has been further extended up to May 24 with Covid-19 cases and related deaths mounting as 18 fatalities and 591 new cases were registered on Wednesday.
The lockdown, which was to have concluded on May 17, was extended by another week with Covid-19 cases consistently rising and the East Khasi Hills district currently having 2121 active cases.
“In view of the increasing trend of active cases and based on the report received from districts, the government has decided to extend the lockdown in East Khasi Hills till 24th May, 2021,” chief minister Conrad K Sangma informed after holding a review meeting this evening. ....

Mizoram govt seeks IAF’s help to control wildfire
Official sources said the fire, which broke out in Lunglei distrct of the state on Saturday, was spreading fast due to wind and temperature.

GUWAHATI: The Mizoram government on Sunday sought the help of the Indian Air Force to control a massive wildfire which affected 20 sq km areas in the state’s Lunglei district.
“On the requisition of Mizoram government, the Indian Air Force is deploying two Mi-17V5 helicopters, equipped with Bambi Buckets, to douse the major fire in Lunglei district and adjoining areas,” Shillong-based defence spokesman Wing Commander Ratnakar Singh told this newspaper. ....

First disk-footed bat from India reported in Meghalaya | India News


GUWAHATI: Researchers have hypothesized that rare Eudiscopus populations of the bat from Vietnam and Meghalaya may have a very recent common origin and speculated that Eudiscopus populations might have spread with the expansion of bamboo forests in South East Asia.
A team of scientists led by Dr Uttam Saikia of Zoological Survey of India (ZSI), Shillong and scientists from a few European natural history museums have reported a very specialized bamboo dwelling bat species from the Lailad area adjacent to Nongkhyllem Wildlife Sanctuary in Meghalaya recently.
The bat species Eudiscopus denticulus, aptly called disk-footed bat, is very distinctive in appearance with prominent disk-like pads in the thumb and bright orange colouration. ....
