Former head of regeneration at Sheffield City Council accuses Labour councillor of meeting developers alone and wasting public money as investigation is launched

Submitting.
The complaint was made by Simon Ogden, former head of city regeneration, who worked for the local authority for 36 years.
In it he has accused Coun Iqbal of ‘openly associating with and supporting the interests of certain private commercial parties’; organising meetings with developers without planning officers present, which is explicitly prohibited; and wasting thousands of pounds of taxpayer money by commissioning planning consultations only to cancel them at the last minute.
Coun Iqbal denies all the accusations. A Labour party spokesperson said: “This is an historic complaint that Coun Iqbal will defend robustly.
“Unfortunately, due to the confidentiality around the process we are unable to comment further.”

Families escape to the countryside as first-time buyers return to the cities

Families are escaping to the country and coast, while first-time buyers are returning to cities, according to new data on what buyers want as the property market booms.
It is the latest evidence of shifts in the buyer behaviour amid the coronavirus pandemic and lockdowns, with families chasing suburban, seaside and village life and first-time buyers trying to take advantage of weaker city centre housing markets.
While families tend to be seeking more space at home and outdoors, first-time buyers are looking to set up home in urban areas, a pair of studies from property portals Zoopla and Rightmove show.

Sheffield MP calls for the creation of a new tram-train station

Updated
Saturday, 15th May 2021, 11:28 am
Mr Betts asked local residents if they supported the creation of a new station on the old site, and if so what type of services they wished to see implemented. The consultation received 133 responses from residents of Beighton village.
The results of the survey were overwhelmingly clear: 97.7 per cent of respondents are in favour of creating a new station at Beighton on the old station site, and 85.7 per cent of respondents are also in favour of establishing of a Park and Ride there to try and get people to transfer from car to rail.
The MP said: “I am a strong advocate of creating a new tram-train station at the old Beighton station site and expanding the network through existing railway lines in that community. We must act now to avoid being left behind by other cities which have recently extended their tram systems and have plans in place for further expansion. We have to be bold and ambitious, because other cities like Manchester, Nottingham and Birmingham have overtaken us in terms of light railway development since Supertram launched 27 years ago.”

Sheffield weather forecast for bank holiday weekend

Sheffield City Centre. A few People out enjoying the sun in Sheffield Peace Gardens.
With cafes, bars, pubs and restaurants unable to open until May 17, their outdoor areas have been relying on the good weather.
After two weeks of sun, it looks like bank holiday weekend may not be as warm – but there’s good news as the rain is expected to hold off until Monday, with only light showers forecasted.
Despite forecast for rain, the weather is holding up today, Thursday, April 29, and sporadic light drizzle means it is still safe for outdoor drinking, eating or walking. It should remain dry as we move into the evening.
