VOLUNTEERS who organise the Poppy Appeal in Swindon are calling on people around the town to support them after a difficult year.
The Royal British Legion is celebrating its centenary this year but is struggling to recover from the loss of fundraising caused by Covid in 2020.
RBL Swindon secretary and veteran Bob Lane said: “The poppy appeal was not successful last year because of the pandemic. People wanted to buy a poppy but we couldn’t have veterans and scouts going around selling them like we usually would, though we still managed to raise £2,140 thanks to our committee.
“Our shop closed but we ve been there throughout Covid helping people. ....

Radio station marks Dementia Action Week with daily features

DEMENTIA Action Week is being highlighted next week on Swindon 105.5.
The station is joining with a range of organisations to host interviews and daily features to raise awareness of the condition.
Manager Shirley Ludford said: “Dementia is not a natural part of ageing and there are over 100 causes and diseases of this condition. Covering the subject across seven days gives an opportunity to widen awareness and understanding.
“The word action is important and positive. Taking action when we are concerned, when help is needed for those with the condition, for carers, and for research and funding.” ....

Swindon 105.5 joining forces with England's Community Forests to create urban forest sound map

THE town s community radio station has joined a forest project aimed at getting people to get outside.
Wild Rumpus, the organisers behind the three-day Timber Festival that celebrates people’s connection to trees and woodlands, is teaming up with England’s Community Forests to create the first-ever Community Forest Sound Map.
People are invited to record a minute of audio when visiting a forest accompanied by a picture, which will then be added to a sound map.
A radio series on Swindon 105.5 has been launched alongside the sound map which explores different themes around urban areas and forests. It features guests including This Morning GP, Dr Zoe Williams, podcaster Melissa Harrison and Black Girls Hike founder Rhiane Fatinikun. ....
