Cleveland Co. Teachers Worried About K-4 Return to Full In-Person Learning

The Cleveland County School Board will hold an emergency meeting on Thursday night.
“I wanted a way for people to be able to have their voices heard,” says Amanda Buchanan, media specialist at Shelby Intermediate School.
She’s started a petition asking Cleveland County School Board members to reconsider plans to return some students to full in-person learning.
Currently, Kindergarten through 4th grade students are set to move to “Plan A” on January 19th, a group that includes Buchanan’s daughter.
“I know that if there are 22 to 25 children in her fourth grade classroom, there is no way that there will be six feet between those 25 children,” she says. ....

Petition asks board to reconsider returning to full-time instruction
More than 2,000 people have signed an online petition asking the Cleveland County Board of Education to reconsider its decision to send some of the county s youngest students back to school this month.
In December the school board voted 8-1 for a plan to send all prekindergarten through fourth-grade students back to five days of instruction following the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.
With coronavirus case counts climbing to a critical point, some have now expressed concerns with that plan. A petition created by Amanda Buchanan, media specialist at Shelby Intermediate School and parent to a fourth-grader, and shared on change.org has garnered more than 2,500 signatures in less than a week. ....

With his bright red robes and a gleaming gold title belt, Hopper has, for the last two years, turned himself into Hop, the Black Santa Claus. He wants to share a bro-ho-ho and a Merry Christmas with as many young people as he can this time of year.
There is a diversity in how people like to celebrate Christmas. But no matter how you celebrate, everybody believes in happiness and smiles, and happiness and smiles are what is needed this year, said Hopper, principal of fifth- and sixth-graders at Shelby Intermediate School. ....
