The Des Moines County supervisors heard a snow job Tuesday along with departmental reports and other agenda items.
County engineer Brian Carter regaled Thomas Broeker, Jim Cary and Shane McCampbell with tales of snow removal by his dedicated, stalwart road crews.
I can t say enough about the guys, Carter said. All the credit to them, they have put in long hours. Yesterday was supposed to be a day off, but that didn t work out. It s just been grinding.
He said it s frustrating to plow a road and 10 hours later it s plugged again. ....

When the Des Moines County supervisors met Tuesday, the agenda was mostly the COVID-19 vaccine situation.
Chair Thomas Broeker, Jim Cary and Shane McCampbell heard reports from department heads before turning the meeting over to Des Moines County Public Health Administrator Christa Poggemiller, who brought everyone up to speed on the current state of vaccinations in the county.

The bad news? There is currently no first-shot vaccine available or scheduled for DMC until the estimated Feb. 1 date for Phase 1B. Iowa is currently in Phase 1A health care providers and residents and staff of long-term care facilities. ....

Des Moines County supervisors Thomas Broeker, chair, Jim Cary and Shane McCampbell met Tuesday to hear the latest COVID numbers and got some good news relative to all of 2020 from DMC public health director Christa Poggemiller.
We re rolling out the vaccine, Poggemiller said.
She said as of Sunday 1,162 DMC residents were vaccinated for a DMC total of 1,537; out-of-county health workers and others who qualify are included in the overall total even though they don t live here.
We gave more vaccines yesterday, so we anticipate that number will be higher come tomorrow, Poggemiller said, announcing that COVID vaccination numbers are now available online at coronavirus.iowa.gov and are updated Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. ....

DMC Supervisors frustrated by DHS Budget

The Des Moines County Board of Supervisors discussed the Department of Human Services Thursday, focusing on how much money the department spends versus how much it asks for every year at budget time.
During the budget meeting, supervisors noted that DHS regularly does not spend their entire budget yet continues to request the same amount of money.
If you don t need it, we don t have to levy for it, said Supervisor Tom Broeker.
Des Moines County is one of 10 counties that pay for the Eastern Iowa Service Area for DHS. DHS is one of a handful of organizations for which the county provides funding without having any control over the budget. ....

It was a good run.
Bob Beck, a Democrat, served as a Des Moines County supervisor for 16 years before losing his seat to former Burlington mayor Shane McCampbell in the Nov. 3 general election.
McCampbell received 8,347 votes, incumbent runner-up Jim Cary got 7,924, and Beck lost to Cary a slim 14-vote margin with 7,910.
The Des Moines County Board of Supervisors is the executive branch of county government; supervisors are the county s policymakers and administer county programs by reviewing budget requests, appropriating funds, establishing tax levies, enacting ordinances, filling employee vacancies and hearing reports from county officers.
