Stony Brook softball can t figure out Coppersmith, lose to UMBC in America East title game – The Statesman

ETHAN TAM/THE STATESMAN The Stony Brook softball team advanced to the title game of the 2021 America East Softball Championship, falling just short of a ring to a familiar foe. The third-seeded Seawolves lost two games against No. 1 seed UMBC, who took home its second consecutive title both against Stony Brook. The Seawolves also won two games against Albany in the double-elimination tournament but had no answer for the best pitcher in the conference. UMBC junior Courtney Coppersmith, the America East Pitcher of the Year, allowed one run in three playoff starts. She threw a 1-0 shutout in Saturday’s decisive game, securing the victory even though Stony Brook senior Dawn Bodrug pitched a one-hitter.

Thrilling walk-off caps Stony Brook softball s doubleheader sweep of UMass Lowell – The Statesman

ETHAN TAM/THE STATESMAN It was a battle for first place when the Stony Brook softball team hosted UMass Lowell at University Field on Wednesday, April 28 for what could have been a standings-altering doubleheader. However, the Seawolves made the most of their opportunity, extending their hold on first place in the America East from two games to four by sweeping the series in thrilling fashion. UMass Lowell had the chance to even itself up with Stony Brook in the standings, as a sweep for them would have made both teams 7-3 in conference play.  Playing their most important series to date, the Seawolves turned to senior pitcher Dawn Bodrug for game one. Bodrug was coming off of an untouchable weekend performance in Maine, where she pitched complete-game shutouts on both Saturday and Sunday, striking out 22 batters in the process. She entered with a 23.1 innings scoreless streak. That was snapped immediately.

Bodrug throws one-hit shutout in Stony Brook softball s road victory over Seton Hall – The Statesman

STEPHANIE MACH/THE STATESMAN If the mark of a great player is that they make the spectacular seem ordinary, then senior pitcher Dawn Bodrug is doing something right.  A lone fifth-inning double spoiled her bid for a perfect game in the Stony Brook softball team’s 2-0 road win over the Seton Hall Pirates on April 14, but that sort of statistic is becoming routine it was the sixth time in Bodrug’s Stony Brook career that she allowed one hit or less in a complete game, and her eighth shutout. “I was really just hitting my spots, working with my catcher and [assistant coach Candi] Letts,” Bodrug said in a press release. “Every inning we had a game plan for the next inning. They’re an aggressive-hitting team. They like to take their hacks. I just had to hit my spots, work my spin, and obviously rely on my defense. It was a textbook game of just using your defense and making plays.”

Graduate students lead the way in Softball s sweep of Hartford – The Statesman

SARA RUBERG/THE STATESMAN With a three-game sweep of the Hartford Hawks this weekend, Stony Brook’s softball team improved to 5-0 in America East play its best start since 2012. Three graduate students pitcher Melissa Rahrich, center fielder Jourdin Hering and catcher Jordyn Nowakowski combined for 14 RBIs and four home runs, while Rahrich and senior Dawn Bodrug allowed only three runs during the series. Led by three RBIs each from Rahrich and Hering, the Seawolves scored seven runs in the first inning of Saturday’s opener en route to an 8-0 mercy-rule win.  Bodrug tossed her fourth shutout of the year, striking out 11 and allowing one hit over five innings. Though she hit two of the first three batters with pitches, she regrouped and showed the excellent ball control that has characterized her season thus far.
