Boston's movie theaters are open. Will you be in attendance?

The demand for big screen movies is so high that when Coolidge Corner Theatre recently announced that it would be reopening for in-person viewings for the first time in over a year, they had to shut down their ticketing page twice.
“There’s nothing like seeing a movie in the theater on the big screen,” said Beth Gilligan, the director of development and marketing at the Coolidge. “Our ticket system sort of buckled under the weight of intense audience demand, which in the scheme of things, is not the worst problem to have.”
Thank you for bearing with us! We re glad everyone s excited to come back… so excited that our ticketing system crashed. We think we ve identified the bugs, so tickets will be going back on sale today at 3pm ⏰ pic.twitter.com/lK5i3wEGQ3 Coolidge Corner Theatre (@thecoolidge) May 7, 2021 ....

After 14 Months Of Movies At Home, A Film Critic Returns To The Cinema

The marquee of the Coolidge Corner Theater annouces their reopening on May 13 after being closed to the public for 14 months due to the pandemic. (Jesse Costa/WBUR)
It had been two weeks and three days since my second vaccine shot and 429 days since I’d been to the movies when I walked back into the old, familiar lobby of the Coolidge Corner Theatre on Thursday night for its reopening. Things look a little different now than they did when I’d last been there in February of 2020. Beyond just a snazzy new coat of paint, the concession stand is now enclosed in plexiglass and the similarly aquarium-like bar now shunted off to the other side of the lobby. Both were closed for this evening’s show, management keeping a fully masked, no-food-or-drink policy for the time being, while we all get used to watching movies together again. (I’m told that barring any unforeseen developments, snack sales will return in time for Memorial Day weekend.) ....

'A Reckoning In Boston' Asks Its Audience — And Filmmaker — To Examine Privilege

Late one night in an adult education classroom in Dorchester, Kafi Dixon compares the toll of living in an environment that upholds white supremacy to a “slow drip, drip, on a hard stone.” Her comment prompts a burst of discussion. One student ups the comparison to a trickle and the group shares a laugh when another adds, “Turn that faucet off!”
Drawn to the intimacy and transformative potential of the Clemente Course in the Humanities  designed to give adults with limited financial resources a chance to rigorously study literature, history, and philosophy Newton filmmaker James Rutenbeck thought he’d make a documentary full of scenes just like the one described, inspired by students like Dixon. And in fact, he tried. ....

PLACING A BET: EVERETT
When Blessing Chitanda and her partner, Shawn Roberts, bought their home in
Everett four years ago, even small condos near Chitanda’s Studio 27 Salon in the South End seemed out of reach. “We moved here from Boston — it’s close to the city, and way cheaper,” Chitanda says. Last May, the couple took over a commercial space across the street from their house, and now the salon has decamped to Everett, too, where they feel embraced by the community. “Our neighbors are so friendly,” Chitanda says. ....

Irish Film Fest Brings Women Storytellers To The Fore

Exactly one year ago, the Irish Film Festival Boston (IFF) debated canceling its 20th annual celebration of contemporary Irish cinema. With a banner roster of films and guests locked, jury awards selected but not yet announced, plane tickets, print ads and merchandise purchased, and the Somerville Theatre and surrounding restaurants and bars ready and waiting, it felt like an impossible decision to executive director Dawn Morrissey.
“With my hand on my heart, I still sit and cry. The 20th was going to be amazing,” says Morrissey. The fest had even taken a break in 2019 in order to muster resources for its milestone year. ....
