GROWING PAINS: Post-COVID population shift centers on the Highland Lakes

Homebuilding in the Highland Lakes has never been busier, but it can’t keep up with a rising demand from newcomers looking to move to the area, according to several local leaders in the construction and real estate industries. 
“This is the most growth we’ve ever seen, even when my grandfather started the business,” said Matt Winsborough of Winsborough Construction, a company that has been specializing in custom homes and remodels in the Highland Lakes for three generations. More than 116 years of history crumbled to the ground March 22 when a 75-mph straight-line wind laid waste to the building that once housed A.B. McGill & Company General Merchants in Bertram. 
Although the building has been empty since 1997, it filled the hearts of many longtime locals with fond memories of buying wedding china, church shoes, party dresses, washing machines, groceries, and  caskets in the place where they also banked.  ....

Picayune People: Freddie Oakley creates 'gourd-eous' works of fine art

She’s known as “The Gourd Lady” among family and friends, a fact made evident as soon as she opens the front door to her Burnet home. Freddie Watson Dunlap Oakley has filled every wall, tabletop, display case, dish cupboard, and bureau with adroitly decorated gourds. 
“I do fine art gourds,” Oakley said. “These are not craft gourds.” ....
