For two weeks in 1987, the Packers practiced at Olympia in Oconomowoc

Forced to leave the dorm rooms of St. Norbert College in De Pere because they were needed for college students, the Green Bay Packers chose an unlikely destination to end the team's 1987 training camp: Olympia Hotel and Resort in Oconomowoc.
Forrest Gregg, the Packers coach at the time, said his goal was to develop team unity in an isolated setting. But after suffering a 33-0 preseason defeat to the Washington Redskins, reporters for the Milwaukee Journal and Milwaukee Sentinel said the Oconomowoc training camp from Aug. 22-Sept. 4 resembled more of a boot camp.
"These people don't have anything to do," Gregg said in 1987. "They don't have any automobiles. They don't have any friends. The only friends they have are each other. And I can work them out three times a day if I want to."

Ex-West Allis police officer's nonprofit aids injured first responders

Making sure the "forgotten ones" don't get left behind.
That's the goal of a new organization created to help first responders who've been injured in the line of duty.
It's called Injured Sheepdogs and it was started by Ryan Kendall, a former Milwaukee and West Allis police officer who was injured on the job in 2019 and forced to retire from the department.
The organization, operated by Kendall and his wife Jennifer on a volunteer basis, pledges to provide support, resources and an outlet for both the injured first responders and their families.
Idea spawned
Kendall, 38, of West Allis, said being a cop was his childhood dream and meant everything to him, and to have it ripped away after only a six-year stint in law enforcement led him to some dark times.

Wauwatosa Mayor Dennis McBride wants to give gift cards for vaccines

The city could pay for the program by using federal funds it received from the American Rescue Plan Act. The city got $25 million from that act, a federal relief package addressing COVID-19.
McBride said half of those funds will come later in May. The other half will come in a year.
McBride also wants more city staff to get the vaccine, and the gift card proposal could help make that happen.
The specifics of the idea would be hashed out by the common council if it decides to pursue the idea.
It's using community outreach, mobile vaccine units, advertisements, social media and more to get there. Recent data shows over 65% of Wauwatosa residents ages 18 and older have received at least one dose of the vaccine.
