It seems like a paradox, but it’s true. New York ski areas generally reported more skiers than usual this winter in some cases many more despite challenges such as state-imposed capacity restrictions meant to slow coronavirus spread.
This pandemic winter was good to the downhill ski areas New York state owns: Whiteface and Gore in the Adirondacks and Belleayre in the Catskills. All together, skier and snowboarder visits were up 14% over the previous winter (up to 580,000), and season pass sales were up 25%, according to officials with the state Olympic Regional Development Authority, which runs these and other winter sports venues. ....

Well, if you are a snowsports enthusiast looking forward to time on the slopes, but are not a season-pass holder, hopefully you have reserved your lift tickets by now.
Don’t have a lift ticket yet? You could be out of luck. As many skiers learned last month, advanced reservations online are the name of the game these days. At many areas, the walk-up ticket window is a thing of the past.
Take Gore, for example. If you had planned to go during the Christmas-to-New Year’s week, but didn’t reserve prior to Dec. 15, you were closed out. With COVID -19 capacity limitations in place, there were no more tickets available for sale well ahead of the holiday. Throughout the Northeast, a lot of people who had made lodging reservations found themselves without tickets to ride when they got to the slopes. ....

If not, some will find themselves out in a more figurative cold: Amid spiking COVID-19 cases, many areas have halted sales for the weekend and during the Christmas-to-New Year’s period, which is traditionally the busiest time of the season.
For the owner-operators of ski areas, most of whom will be open by Saturday, the snowstorm along with the onset of cold snowmaking weather is a welcome change after what had been an unusually warm and dry season so far. ....
