Having a choice of foods may accelerate aging and shorten the lifespan of fruit flies, according to a study published today in the open-access eLife journal.

While early experiments have shown that calorie restriction can extend lifespan, the current study adds to the growing body of evidence that suggests other diet characteristics besides calories may also influence aging and lead to earlier death.

Parents challenge charge in death | News, Sports, Jobs

HOLLIDAYSBURG A couple whose one-month old baby died while sleeping in a small bed with his parents and a brother are challenging a felony charge brought by Pennsylvania State Police of endangering the welfare of a child.
The baby’s father, Robert Lee Zeth, 37, and mother, Elizabeth Ann McIntyre, 29, in a pretrial hearing Thursday, asked that a Blair County judge dismiss the charge.
Attorney Richard M. Corcoran, representing McIntyre, told President Judge Elizabeth Doyle that he felt the couple was “overcharged” and that was why they wanted a judicial review of the case.
Blair County District Attorney Pete Weeks reported to the judge that he had offered Zeth and McIntyre probationary sentences of 10 years, but, during the hearing, they each indicated they rejected the plea agreement even though they were told that if convicted by a jury, they could face prison sentences. ....
