Indycar: Kiwi drivers go one-two on podium at Texas Motor Speedway

Kiwi drivers Scott Dixon and Scott McLaughlin have finished one-two in the latest Indycar series race in Texas.
For Dixon it was his 51st career victory and fifth in Texas while McLaughlin earned his first podium in his fourth race.
McLaughlin, racing in his first Indycar oval race, began in 15th place and worked his way through the pack to put pressure on Dixon in the closing stages. 21-year-old Pato O Ward was third.
Dixon, in the Chip Ganassi Racing car, said he was so excited when McLaughlin moved into second in the closing stages of the race.
I had this thing on the dash that tells me the gaps of the cars. I had to take it off because it was stressing me out more than anything. I kept looking down and in the mirror as he was fast, Dixon said. ....

Scott Dixon schooled the rest of the Genesys 300 field in an oval-racing clinic Saturday night at Texas Motor Speedway, leading a race-record 206 of 212 laps for his first victory of the 2021 NTT INDYCAR SERIES season.
Dixon drove the No. 9 PNC Bank Chip Ganassi Racing Honda to victory by .2646 of a second over fellow New Zealand native Scott McLaughlin in the No. 3 PPG Team Penske Chevrolet, who was racing on an oval for the first time. Pato O’Ward finished third in the No. 5 Arrow McLaren SP Chevrolet.
“It was a bit of a crazy night for us,” Dixon said. “Definitely very tense there at the end. It was kind of cool to be racing a countryman for the last few laps. Fifth win at Texas, baby! That was awesome.” ....

Scott McLaughlin finished second in his IndyCar oval circuit debut as Scott Dixon had another dominating victory at Texas, winning in the first of two races on consecutive days at the IndyCar Series first oval track this season.
Dixon passed Chip Ganassi Racing teammate and polesitter Alex Palou at the start of the third lap and went on to lead 206 of 212 laps for his 51st career victory, his fifth at the high-banked, 2.4km Texas Motor Speedway.
The 40-year-old New Zealander finished .2646 seconds ahead of fellow countryman McLaughlin, a 27-year-old IndyCar rookie in his first oval race. ....

Dixon led for a race-record 206 of 212 laps for his first victory of the season, driving the No. 9 PNC Bank Chip Ganassi Racing Honda to victory by .2646 of a second over McLaughlin.
It was six-time IndyCar series champion Dixon s 51st IndyCar victory, leaving him just one off tying Mario Andretti for No. 2 on the all-time win list which is topped by AJ Foyt on 67 wins.
Dixon, who started second, held a comfortable lead of three to five seconds at various points during the race, which went the distance despite rain in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. ....
