Austerity and mental health

The Covid crisis has highlighted how quickly a nation can be affected by events out with our control.
The number of deaths in the UK is much too high, and we need to learn the lessons in preparation for the next pandemic which may not be long in arriving.
The effect on mental health is an obvious concern but will lessons be learned here?
The grinding poverty and stress brought about by the Tory austerity measures after the 2008 crash also had a massive effect on mental health and public health more generally.
It is estimated that between 100-130,000 people lost their lives in the UK directly as a result of austerity policies: a comparable amount of “excess deaths” to those lost in this pandemic.

SNP defends tactic of not mentioning independence

THE SNP has been accused of running a fraudulent campaign in Shetland and across the country by making next to no mention of Scottish independence in its election pamphlets.
Local candidate Brian Nugent of Restore Scotland, the party that wants an independent Scotland to stay outside the EU, also said that according to SNP policy an independent Scotland would aim to re-join the European Union without a further referendum.

Nugent said: “Having received five leaflets from the SNP, a voter should know what they are standing for, but not so.”
Thanking Nugent for studying his leaflets carefully, SNP candidate for the Shetland constituency seat Tom Wills responded by saying that there was “no trick” played here.

Anything good that the SNP offer is automatically “dismissed” by the Lib Dems out of hand.  The latest being the island bond which would offer young families £50k to stay, or come to live, in Shetland. (Proposed island bond a ‘bribe’ or a much needed ‘fresh idea’?,
Shetland News, 16 April 2021).

Ms Wishart negatively calls this incentive a “bribe” designed to entice “folk to come and stay in our islands”. Of course we need to help our own young families stay here, but why would we not also want to entice young families to come here and settle?

Scottish Labour manifesto delayed to Thursday: Sarwar

Top Story
April 19, 2021
EDINBURGH: Anas Sarwar says Scottish Labour’s manifesto launch has been delayed to Thursday due to an “unscheduled” coronavirus announcement from the Scottish government set for Tuesday.
Sarwar said the launch date had been pushed back for a second time — following the delay to the original launch due to the suspension of campaigning after the Duke of Edinburgh’s death. However the First Minister has previously indicated she would be likely to give an announcement this Tuesday.
The Scottish Labour leader said despite the delays he had nevertheless been setting out his policies on job creation and economic recovery. During an appearance on the BBC’s Sunday Show, Sarwar said the original launch had been planned for Monday but was cancelled due to a halt in campaigning, while other parties had been doing their own launches later in the week.

Scottish Lib Dems manifesto vows to put recovery first

Scottish Lib Dems manifesto vows to put recovery first
Top Story
April 17, 2021
EDINBURGH: The Scottish Liberal Democrats have launched their election manifesto with a promise to “put recovery first, not independence”.
Leader Willie Rennie argued that in the wake of coronavirus, “we must bring the country together to recover from this dreadful pandemic”. He insisted: “This is not the moment to go back to the divisions of the past with another independence referendum that will divide because the recovery will require the skills and talents of everyone.
“Just imagine what we can do. This manifesto is packed with over 50 top line commitments. To cut mental health waits. Faster treatment in the NHS. Giving pupils the education they deserve to achieve their best. Creating well paid jobs with a skilled workforce. Taking bold action to tackle climate change.

'Punching above their weight' – Lib Dem Wishart vows to continue speaking up for islanders

FOLLOWING Tavish Scott’s resignation in 2019, his Liberal Democrat successor Beatrice Wishart was always going to have a slightly unusual introduction to parliamentary life – taking up her seat at Holyrood with little over 18 months of the term remaining.
Having served as an SIC councillor and spent many years running the Lerwick constituency office shared by Scott and Northern Isles MP Alistair Carmichael, the then 64-year-old had arguably enjoyed greater preparation for the role than many first-time MSPs.

The British government should not deny the Scottish people a referendum on whether Scotland should remain part of the United Kingdom, if it becomes clear most people want such a vote to be held, a former Downing Street adviser has warned.
Ciaran Martin, who led the UK's National Cyber Security Centre and who was constitution director in the government's Cabinet Office between 2011 and 2014, said in a report issued on Tuesday it would be disastrous for London to force a member nation to stay in the union.
