Fears UK's post-Brexit EU replacement funds will fail remote Scots communities

CAMPAIGNERS have raised concerns the UK Government’s plans for replacing European funding will fail to deliver for Scotland’s rural and island communities.
The Shared Prosperity Fund is being directly administered by Westminster in a move described as a “power grab” by the SNP.
It will be launched next year to replace European Commission development and social fund grants following Brexit.
However, the £220 million Community Renewal Fund introduced as a pilot to the scheme has failed to include the Highlands or Orkney and Shetland on a list of 100 “priority places” across the UK.
The Scottish Islands Federation (SIF), which promotes the interests of Scotland’s 93 inhabited islands, says that EU structural funds have been a significant driver of transforming the economic and social wellbeing of the Highlands and Islands. ....

SNP's low emission ferries pledge 'going backwards'

The Scottish Government has fallen backwards in a promise for 30 per cent of ferries to be low emission by 2032
THE SCOTTISH Government has been accused of going backwards in meeting a key climate pledge to clean up its fleet of lifeline ferries.
The warning comes after Transport Secretary Michael Matheson admitted that the proportion of low emissions ferries has fallen despite a commitment for 30 per cent of the SNP s state-run ferries to be powered by environmentally-friendly technology by 2032.
As part of the Scottish Government s promise to become a carbon neutral nation by 2045, MSPs said they would cut 1990 levels of carbon emissions by a staggering 75% by 2030. ....

SNP minister: Short-term lets plans could penalise rural businesses

SCOTLAND’S Tourism Secretary has “let the cat out the bag” after admitting that his own Government s plans to regulate Airbnb-style short-term lets could penalise traders in rural parts of the country.
Businesses in more isolated parts of Scotland have warned the plans are a “blunt instrument” that will see trade impacted across the country when the industry is attempting to recover from the pandemic.
The Scottish Government has drawn up plans to require owners of short-term let properties to obtain a licence from their local council or face fines of up to £50,000.
If approved, the proposals will come into force on April 1. But local authorities will have until April 1, 2022 to establish a scheme in their area and open it to receive applications, with existing hosts having until April 1, 2023 to apply. ....
