Apprenticeship grant available for employers from Scottish Government

A north-east MSP is encouraging employers in the region to consider applying for an apprenticeship grant.
The Scottish Government’s £15m apprenticeship employer grant provides up to £5,000 for a company to either take on an apprentice aged between 16 and 24, help them upskill, or take on those aged up to 29-year-old who are disabled, a care leaver or from an ethnic minority.
A £3,500 grant is also available for apprentices who are aged 25 and over.
The funding application will close on March 25, or until funding levels are exceeded.
This week also marks Scottish Apprenticeship Week. ....

Samir Khan-Young, above, has been working round the clock to support the NHS in its Covid-19 response.
The former Bannerman High School pupil started his Engineering: Design and Manufacture Graduate Apprenticeship at Thales in 2017 and has established himself as a key member of the team. 
Samir, who plays football for Shettleston FC, believes his greatest achievement to date has been working nightshifts for Thales’ Manufacturing Team as they produced PPE for NHS frontline workers.
He said: “I was delighted to put my skills to good use during lockdown as part of the nightshift team who were making PPE for NHS staff. It was a rewarding experience as we were delivering a vital service as efficiently as possible. ....

An engineering business with a base in Inverness is opening up more opportunities for young talent.
Edwin James Group, the parent company of Inverness-based Korrie Technical Services – now EJ Parker Technical Services – is launching a programme to expand its apprenticeship scheme.
This will see the number of apprentices increase from 10 per cent of its total workforce to 15 per cent over the next two years. The move marks Scottish Apprenticeship Week. ....

Wiktoria Bak, above, is passionate about mental health awareness and was able to discuss issues facing Scotland’s young people with the First Minister, thanks to her Foundation Apprenticeship.
Clydebank-based Wiktoria developed her confidence and communication skills during her work placement and learning with West Dunbartonshire Council Working4U as part of her Social Services and Healthcare Foundation Apprenticeship.
While working in a day-care centre, Wiktoria was able to translate for a Polish client that colleagues were struggling to communicate with. She drew upon her experiences working in the community when she met Nicola Sturgeon at an event in Glasgow.  ....
