An Aberdeenshire folksinger’s voice has become the soundtrack to hopeful Aberdeen Football Club’s fans with her interpretation of The Northern Lights of Old Aberdeen.
The song, originally written by Mary Webb in the early 1950s, is the latest single from Huntly songstress Iona Fyfe.
As part of Aberdeen’s 2021-22 season tickets campaign, the young singer collaborated with the club, who commissioned the recording. ....

Michael Alexander speaks to Monifieth-raised Calum MacCrimmon – founder member of internationally renowned folk band Breabach – which has teamed up with Scottish BAFTA-winning animator Cat Bruce to create a beautiful film and score based on Scottish folktale The Sea Maiden, being aired on February 13 with Dundee Rep.
During these strange and uncertain times, the “new normal” has taken its toll on people from all walks of life including musicians who, almost a year ago, suddenly found all their gigs cancelled.
Amongst them was Monifeth-raised musician Calum MacCrimmon who, as founding member of internationally renowned bagpipe-led folk band Breabach, went from a 2020 diary filled with concert and festival dates to something of an existential vacuum. ....

Glasgow pianist bags BBC's Young Traditional Musician award


Glasgow pianist bags top Scottish folk music award with breathtaking performance
Pianist Michael Biggins has been named Scotland s Young Traditional Musician of the year.
The 23-year-old, originally from Newcastle but now living in Glasgow, won the BBC Scotland prize at a scaled-down, socially distanced event due to coronavirus restrictions.
He performed for judges at the BBC s Pacific Quay HQ in Glasgow, with the event broadcast on radio and TV.
The prize includes a recording session with BBC Scotland, a performance at the Scots Trad Music Awards to be held in December 2021 and a one-year membership to the Musicians Union.
Mr Biggins studied at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and performs with bands TRIP, The Canny Band and Northern Company. ....
