National Nurses’ Week is a time when members of the public raise their voices to thank the men and women at the heart of the health care system.
This year’s festivities were kicked off when the state’s biggest group of nurses broke out something new – a voice of their own.
In a clear and convincing 1,001 to 750 vote that was certified Thursday night, nurses at Maine Medical Center joined a union, for the first time sending representatives to negotiate their pay, benefits and working conditions with hospital management. The Maine State Nurses Association/National Nurses United will now represent 2,000 registered nurses at Maine Med, the state’s biggest hospital, as well as the Scarborough Surgery Center and the MMC Brighton Campus, in Portland. ....

Nurses at Maine Medical Center in Portland have voted 1,001 to 750 to form their first union at Maine’s largest hospital.
The ballots from the mail-in election were counted and certified Thursday night by the National Labor Relations Board, according to a news release issued by National Nurses United.
The vote means that about 2,000 nurses who work at Maine Medical Center, the Scarborough Surgery Center, and Maine Medical Center’s Brighton campus, also in Portland, will be represented in labor negotiations by the Maine State Nurses Association and National Nurses United. ....

Nurses at Maine Medical Center have voted to unionize, after a sometimes heated election concluded this week and after two failed attempts since 2000.
Ballots were counted Thursday night and tallied 1,001 to 750 in favor of representation by the Maine State Nurses Association and National Nurses United, according to the National Labor Relations Board. Nurses at the Maine Med campus on Portland s Western Promenade, the Brighton campus and the Scarborough Surgery Center will all be represented.
The mail-in election began March 29 and asked nearly 2,000 registered nurses employed by Maine Med to accept or reject collective bargaining representation. The deadline for ballots was Tuesday. ....
