It’s a crisp winter morning, but the cold isn’t keeping Anne Mirgalet-Kennedy indoors. Several times a week, the Toronto woman joins the Midtown Raviners Athletic Club (MRAC) for hikes.
“I like the physical challenge, and I like the social part,” says Mirgalet-Kennedy, who takes part in MRAC excursions several times a week.
Sanjay Coehlo, meanwhile, says before joining the group, he had no idea what natural “treasures” Toronto possessed, referring to the city’s ravines and the Beltline Trail.
Coehlo said, however, what’s almost as important to him now, is the sense of connection he gets from the group during what has otherwise been a time of social isolation. ....

Under attack by fraudsters? Expect to wait on hold with these Canadian banks

Canadian big banks’ slow response to customers attacked by fraudsters is under fire by advocates after a Toronto woman trying to shut down her debit card due to a taxi scam was left waiting on hold for 40 minutes as she watched scammers drain thousands of dollars from her account.
A CTV News Toronto test of the banks’ response showed while some banks responded in two minutes or less to a report of a stolen card, others waited upwards of half an hour to provide a real person or useful advice for someone in a stressful and costly situation. ....

Experts say buying used appliances could be better for environment and wallets

Due to COVID-19, some appliance stores say they have been unable to keep up with demand as the disease caused some factories to close or reduce their production and more people are doing home renovations.
However, if you don t need a fridge or a stove that is brand new or if you re trying to save money, it might make more sense to buy used appliances.
No one wants to end up with someone else’s problems, so researchers at Consumer Reports warn people to be cautious when buying used appliances through Kijiji, Craigslist and Facebook.
They suggest that people instead go to stores that specialize in used appliances and have their own technicians, offer warrantees and savings of 50 per cent or more. ....

Cement truck rollover shuts down northbound lanes of Highway 400

TORONTO
The northbound lanes of a busy GTA highway were shut down for hours following a cement truck rollover Monday evening.
The collision happened in the northbound lanes of Highway 400 near Lloydtown-Aurora Road at around 5 p.m.
Images from the scene showed the cement truck flipped over on its side.
“The driver of this cement truck was exiting (Lloydtown-Aurora) Road and trying to ramp onto Highway 400 northbound, when he lost control,” Ontario Provincial Police Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said in a social media post.
The driver was uninjured, but the northbound lanes of the highway were shut down for several hours. ....
