Scripps Health this week began notifying more than 147,000 individuals that their financial and health information was contained in documents stolen by attackers who deployed ransomware on the healthcare organization s network in May.
In a statement Tuesday, San Diego-based Scripps Health says its investigation into the incident discovered on May 1 has determined that an unauthorized person gained access to its network, deployed malware and, on April 29, acquired copies of some of the documents containing patient information.
As the investigation is ongoing, we do not yet know the content of the remainder of documents we believe are involved, though we are working with third party experts to determine those facts as quickly as possible, Scripps Health says ....

Did hackers steal records before ransomware attack? Scripps Health still not saying

Did hackers make off with private medical or financial information when they attacked Scripps Health on May 1, or did they just encrypt server contents and demand a ransom?
Eleven days later, Chris Van Gorder, Scripps’ chief executive officer, said in an email that he still could not share any answers.
“The investigation is ongoing,” Van Gorder said.
The dearth of details from the region’s second-largest health care system, one that employed more than than 13,000 people and handled more than 1.3 million clinic visits in fiscal 2020, is trying the patience of patients who say they feel like they should at least know the extent of the damage by now. ....

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - After a malware attack began affected Scripps Health on May 1st, the hospital still won t say whether patient records were compromised.
A cybersecurity expert told ABC 10News that the biggest potential threat is patient safety, not confidentiality.
All this consternation about records is a little misplaced. Knocking down infrastructure that results in impacts like loss of life is a much bigger deal, said expert Mike Hamilton with CI Security. He is also the former Chief Information Security Officer for the City of Seattle. ....

A ransomware attack continued to plague Scripps Health on May 3, creating confusion for patients and their families, especially those who were scheduled for appointments this week.
After fighting to regain control of its systems since the incident occurred May 1, Scripps said two days later that it still had not resolved the technical terrorism that put its patient records, scheduling and other critical systems offline, forcing medical personnel in hospitals and other facilities to revert to paper for the time being. ....
