Lesa Benjamin’s father, Tim Ward, passed away in law enforcement custody in March 2020.He was arrested for DUI. Benjamin believes he had a stroke while he was driving and that the signs of that stroke were not noticed by the South Carolina Highway Patrol trooper who arrested Ward.Ward failed a field sobriety test, according to the trooper’s report. He could not register a reading when his breath was tested for alcohol, and he was taken to the hospital to have his blood tested, the report shows.Ward was evaluated by medical professionals after he fell, according to the report, and cleared to be taken to the detention center.He was returned to the hospital the same evening. Days later, Ward’s autopsy revealed the stroke along with heart failure.When researching the trooper’s training record, WYFF News 4 Investigates found he was not first-aid certified.The investigation revealed the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy no longer offers first-aid certifica ....

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - A year after a use of force incident that involved throwing a woman to the ground by her hair, all of the Richland County Sheriff’s Department deputies listed on the scene have either been fired or resigned.
However, the deputies’ supervisors remain in positions where they may review future use of force incidents.
A WIS investigation into RCSD Defensive Action Reports, S.C. Criminal Justice Academy records, and interviews with those involved show a mixed record of discipline after the January 2020 incident. ....
