WHMI 93.5 Local News : BAS Therapy Dog Recuperating After Surgery

Ford - one of the Brighton Area School District’s 12 social-emotional-learning dogs — is resting at home after surgery last month for a torn ligament, which is equivalent to an ACL tear in his knee. The surgery was performed by Oakland Veterinary Referral Services in Bloomfield Twp., which donated the surgical procedure and waived all related charges.
It was for that reason that the Brighton Board of Education named the veterinary practice a “Shining Star” at its March 22nd meeting and accepted the donation of $3,900 in veterinary services. Karen Storey, whose idea it was to start the “Pack of Dogs” program and who is its founder, says, “They jumped right on board to help Ford out. They knew first-hand the value that our dogs bring to the children’s and staff’s social and emotional well-being.” Storey adds that Dr. Kristin Wilson of the Arbor ....

WHMI 93.5 Local News : Contracts Awarded For BAS Bond Projects

The Brighton Board of Education recently approved contracts on several million dollars worth of construction and technology-related work resulting from the $59.4 (m) million bond issue passed by the voters in November of 2019.
The projects in phase II of the bond issue pertain to the new STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics) building to be constructed as an addition to the high school, mechanical and technology improvements.
The STEAM Center will be located on the South side of the high school complex next to the tennis courts and will be directly connected to the high school. Plans are to start construction in the near future, most likely during spring break, with completion by late November - provided there are no weather-related or other delays. There will also be STEAM center additions for each of the four elementary schools, plus STEAM upgrades at Maltby Inte ....

When Matthew Outlaw took over as superintendent of the Brighton Area Schools in early November, he challenged the staff, students and families to find ways to be grateful and gracious.
While Outlaw designated November as a month to be thankful, December was dedicated to a spirit of generosity. From the results, it would seem that everybody rose to the challenge. School district staff and families donated their time to volunteer for the Salvation Army Bell Ringing program at Kroger and Busch’s in Brighton, raising $1,803 in 18 hours, with 18 volunteers. The four elementary schools: Hawkins, Hilton, Hornung and Spencer, in partnership with Brighton Ford, collected 2,500 toys to give to children in need. Brighton High school teacher Karen Storey, who is in charge of the Brighton Area Schools’ Pack of Dogs program, says the district’s social-emotional-learning dogs attended the ....
