A new private 5G network at the University of Connecticut s Stamford campus will advance academic programs and expand entrepreneurial activities in the Stamford Data Science Initiative. The university is working with AT&T to roll out the company s 5G millimeter wave and multi-access edge compute (MEC) technology, which enables near real-time, ultra-high bandwidth and ultra-low latency access for latency-dependent mobile applications, according to a news announcement. The collaboration is supported by startup-focused organizations CTNext and StamfordNext.
The Stamford Data Science Initiative includes a Start-up Studio, Technology Incubation Program (TIP) and the construction of a new 5G Lab, expected to be complete by late summer 2021. The University of Connecticut is spending $300,000 to set up a high-speed internet system across its Stamford regional campus in a partnership with AT&T that could be expanded to other parts of the university system, officials said Monday.
Officials said the system, scheduled to go online in time for the fall semester, will make the regional campus one of the first in the nation to have a dedicated 5G network, providing advantages for classes and research.
Cellular companies began introducing this new generation of network technology commercially a couple of years ago and are expanding 5G across the country. But those networks are still in their early stages and not widely available outside major cities. The systems are designed to improve bandwidth, especially in urban areas, allowing many more devices to connect and much higher upload and download spee ....

UConn and AT&T are collaborating to advance academic programs in data science, entrepreneurship, and innovation by bringing 5G+ millimeter wave and multi-access edge (MEC) technology to the Stamford campus, the company and University announced Monday, April 19.
The partnership makes UConn Stamford one of the region’s first campuses to use the advanced capabilities in its current academic and entrepreneurial activities, and to provide the technological foundation to establish and expand others.
With the support of CTNext and StamfordNext, AT&T’s collaboration with UConn Stamford will bring 5G capabilities to bolster the UConn Stamford Data Science Initiative, which includes the Stamford Start-up Studio, the UConn Technology Incubation Program (TIP Digital) in Stamford, and the work of a soon-to-be hired team of data science research faculty. ....
