Angola arts, present and future


ANGOLA — Art is taking center stage in Angola this summer with the return of the Angola Arts Festival and a potential expansion of the Mayor’s Art Council.
The Angola Arts Festival, which was canceled last summer due to the pandemic, will take place in downtown Angola this year on Saturday.
The all-day event will take place around Public Square and will feature over 40 artists and vendors with sidewalk sales from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Art projects for kids will be available from 9-11 a.m. at the Steuben County Court House courtyard. Activities include clay sculptures, salt painting, rock painting and pop tart art, where kids can use food coloring to paint plain pop tarts for an artful treat. ....

Steuben visitor traffic strong over holiday weekend


ANGOLA — If there was any reminder of what tourism’s impact on Steuben County was like before the COVID-19 pandemic hit, it was the Fourth of July weekend.
Some are saying it was as busy as ever, with thousands of visitors out on Steuben County’s lakes, dining in restaurants, shopping and staying at hotels.
Perhaps the biggest indicator of a huge holiday weekend was Pokagon State Park where it was estimated some 15,000 people visited from Friday through Monday, based on gate fees and park pass use. That’s the maximum social carrying capacity at the park, said June Julien, executive director of the Steuben County Tourism Bureau. ....

Festival fun set to return in northeast Indiana


You can almost smell the popcorn, taste the ice cream, the greasy but good fair food and hear the crack and screech of fireworks.
Many area festivals and fairs are slated to return in 2021 after COVID-19 wiped out most events a year ago.
“Things are definitely happening in LaGrange County,” said Phyllis Youga, executive director of the LaGrange County Convention and Visitors Bureau.
Shipshewana’s MayFest went off well, with some new events planned and returning events forthcoming.
“We are seeing a great response,” Youga said. “We are very pleased with the recovery.” The popular flea market in Shipshewana resumed in May at 85% capacity. Businesses she’s talked to are also happy with the rebound. ....

Gather today on the lawn at the Potawatomi Inn lawn at Pokagon State Park, 6 Lane 100A Lake James, Angola, for the Fort Wayne Philharmonic Patriotic Pops concert at 7:30 p.m.
The annual performance, sponsored by the Steel Dynamics Foundation, is free to the public, but park entrance fees do apply. Entrance fees are $7 for Indiana resident vehicles and $9 for non-residents. ....
